Anniversaire de l'arrivée de Christophe Colomb aux Amériques, le 12 octobre 1492 dans le calendrier Julien, soit le 21 octobre 1492 au calendrier gréorgien actuel. C'est un jour de congé aux USA sauf en Californie où le gouverneur Schwarzeneger l'a supprimé en 2009.

Flag Day

Jour du Drapeau : 14 juin depuis le second Congrès continental de 1777. Cc n'est pas un jour de congé fédéral mais d'état. Le président demande aux cotoyens de faire flotter toute la semaine du 14 juin. Il doit aussi être mis sur tous les bâtiments gouvernementaux.

Harvest Moon

La lune des moissons est la pleine lune qui est la plus proche de l'équinoxe d'automne. Elle est souvent confondue avec la lune du chasseur. Au lieu de se lever 50 minutes plus tôt chaque jour, la lune à cette période se lève 30 minutes plus tôt plusieurs soirs,. Il n'y a pas de longue période d'obscurité entre le coucher du soleil et le lever de lune. Ceci permettait aux fermeirs de continuer à travailler à la rentrée de la moisson.

Labor Day

Aux États-Unis, le Labor Day (ou Fête du Travail) n'est pas directement lié aux fameuses journées de mai 1886 à Chicago dites Haymarket affair.

C'est avec la résolution suivante prise dans l'été de 1885, par le Central Labor Union fondé à New-York en mars 1882 que le 1er Mai se changea en 1er lundi de Septembre aux États-Unis. Alors que d’autres organisations syndicales avaient déjà voté et adopté une proposition visant à honorer le 1er mai 1886.

Saint_Patrick

17 mars. Date de la mort de Saint Patrick en 461. Première célébration en Amérique à Boston en 1737. Les Américains le fêtent en s'habillant de vert. Parades dans les grandes villes.

Thanksgiving (Quatrième jeudi de novembre)

Jour d'action de grâces sur décision d'Abraham Lincoln depuis 1864 en souvenir de l'aide apportée par les Améridiens aux immigrés du Mayflower en 1621. Une fête avait été organisée fin novembre pour les remercier d'avoir appris aux colons la culture du maïs. Les Améridiens amenèrent du gibier et des dindes à rotir.

Trick or Treat

Trick-or-treat est une coutume d'Halloween. Les enfants costumés vont de maison en maison, demandant des gâteries sous forme de bonbons, ou parfois d'argent, en posant la question, "Trick or treat?" Le "trick" est une menace pendante qi provoquera des ennuis au propriétaire ou à sa propriété si aucun gâterie n'est donnée.

Trick-or-treating is a custom for children on Halloween. Children proceed in costume from house to house, asking for treats such as candy, or sometimes money, with the question, "Trick or treat?" The "trick" is an idle threat to perform mischief on the homeowners or their property if no treat is given.

Worm Moon

Pleine lune de mars. Appelée ainsi parce que les vers de terre sortent avec le dégel.

As the temperature begins to warm and the ground begins to thaw, earthworm casts appear, heralding the return of the robins. For this reason, the March full moon is often known as the Full Worm Moon.

Northern Native American tribes knew this moon as the Full Crow Moon when the cawing of crows signaled the end of winter. They also used Full Crust Moon because the snow cover became crusted from thawing by day and freezing at night.

The Dakota Sioux named it Moon When Eyes Are Sore From Bright Snow. The Full Sap Moon, marking the time of tapping maple trees, is a Colonial American variation. To the settlers, it was also known as the Lenten Moon. It was considered to be the last full moon of winter.
